Troubleshooting your filtration system

Your PureFlow system is built to sit quietly in the background and just work. Every now and then you might notice something and wonder if it’s a problem. Most of the time it isn’t. Here’s how to tell the difference, and when to get us involved.

Your system is designed to be maintained by you. Most customers change their own cartridges and check the system themselves, and a lot of what’s below you can sort out in a few minutes. When something’s beyond a cartridge change, that’s when we step in.

Normal, and nothing to worry about

Cloudy or milky water. Almost always trapped air, not a fault. Pour a glass and leave it on the bench. If it clears from the bottom up within a minute or two, that’s air working its way out. It settles within a day or so of normal use.

A tap spitting or sputtering. Also air in the lines after the system has been opened for a service. Run the tap for a few minutes and it clears.

The water tastes or feels different. That’s the chlorine gone. Most people notice the water tastes cleaner and feels softer on the skin, which is the system doing its job. It’s normal for it to take a day or two to get used to.

A bit of gurgling from the reverse osmosis system. When you draw water from the RO tap, the system refills its tank and can make a soft gurgling or trickling sound. That’s normal.

Have a look yourself

Water pressure drops noticeably, or keeps dropping. This is almost always your cartridges. Open the system up and check them. A cartridge that's done its job will look dirty or discoloured, and it'll be restricting your flow. Swap it out and your pressure should come back.

Turn off the water supply to the system first and open a tap to release the pressure before you open a housing. If the cartridges look fine, or the pressure doesn't return after you've replaced them, give us a call.

A leak, drip or water pooling around the unit or under the sink. Turn off the water supply to the system first. If it's started right after a filter change, it's usually a housing that hasn't seated properly or an O-ring that's twisted or out of place. Check the O-ring is sitting flat in its groove and the housing is done up firmly. If the leak keeps going, or it's coming from anywhere other than a housing, call us.

Little or no water from the RO tap. Check the supply valve to the system is fully open, and that the RO cartridges aren't overdue. If both look right, give us a call.

A taste or smell that comes back or won't clear after a day or two. Usually a sign your carbon cartridge is spent. Replace it and it should clear.

Discoloured or brown water that doesn't clear when you run the tap. Worth a call. Sometimes it's the filter, sometimes it's the mains or your home's plumbing, and we'll help work out which.

The reverse osmosis tap keeps running to the drain and won't stop. Not one to chase yourself. Give us a call and we'll take a look.

The UV alarm on your rainwater system. That's the lamp letting you know it's near the end of its life and needs replacing. Isolate the power before you go near it, and handle the lamp and quartz sleeve carefully, they're fragile and shouldn't be touched with bare hands. If you'd rather not do this one, we'll come and do it.

If something just doesn't seem right and it's not on this list, call us anyway. We'd rather hear from you.

When to call us in

You know your system, and cartridges are yours to change. Get us involved when there's a leak you can't stop, a damaged or cracked part, anything involving the plumbing itself, or the system still isn't behaving after you've put fresh cartridges in. There's no cost in asking.
