Geelong Water Quality: What’s Actually Coming Out of Your Taps

Who manages your water

Your water supply is managed by Barwon Water, Victoria’s largest regional urban water corporation. It services more than 320,000 permanent residents across an 8,100 km² region stretching from Little River in the north to Apollo Bay in the south-west — a population that swells to around 545,000 during peak holiday periods on the coast.

Where your water actually comes from

Geelong’s supply isn’t a single source — it’s a blended network, which is part of why water quality and taste can vary depending on where you are in the region and how dry the season has been:

  • West Barwon Reservoir (Otway Ranges, near Forrest) supplies more than 80% of the region’s drinking water. It’s transferred via a 57km gravity-fed channel to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, then treated and fluoridated at the Wurdee Boluc Water Treatment Plant before reaching Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, Torquay, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Winchelsea and Moriac.
  • The Moorabool system (Korweinguboora, Bostock, Stony Creek and Lal Lal reservoirs) is treated at the Moorabool Water Treatment Plant and primarily feeds suburbs north of the Geelong city centre — relevant for Lara and surrounding areas.
  • The Melbourne to Geelong Pipeline, a 59km underground connection between Werribee and Geelong’s Lovely Banks storage basins, was upgraded in 2025 to carry up to 22 billion litres a year. It’s used to top up supply from Melbourne’s grid during dry periods.
  • The Anglesea Borefield draws from an underground aquifer and is used to supplement supply to the Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula and southern Geelong when reservoir levels need relief.

What this means for your tap

Depending on rainfall and which sources are active, your water may be a shifting mix of upland reservoir water, treated groundwater and pipeline-transferred Melbourne water. A whole-house filter standardises the taste and removes disinfection residue regardless of which source is currently supplying your street.

Fluoride and hardness

Geelong’s water supply has been fluoridated since 2009, dosed at 0.9mg/L. Water across the region is naturally soft, you don’t need a water softener, and scaling isn’t the issue. The real issues are chlorine taste/odour, disinfection by-products, and (in growth areas) construction sediment.

Our Water Filter Range

Our advanced four-stage whole house filtration system purifies water down to 0.5-1 microns using large 10″ or 20″ cartridges, optimising efficiency and longevity while effectively eliminating contaminants. This comprehensive system ensures clean, filtered water is delivered to every tap and shower throughout your home—enhancing your family’s health and well-being, protecting your plumbing and appliances, and improving your overall quality of life.

Our advanced five-stage reverse osmosis system reduces up to 98% of contaminants, including fluoride, while enriching the water with essential minerals. This results in clean, high-alkaline water with a pH of ~9, offering added peace of mind and supporting overall health. Featuring a USA-made RO membrane and a 12-litre stainless steel storage tank, the system ensures durability, safety, and the highest quality drinking water for your family.

Our premium UV Rainwater Filtration System eliminates bacteria and viruses from your tank water while capturing both fine and coarse sediment. Made in Italy, this all-in-one unit includes dual-stage filtration and a high-output UV lamp, ensuring reliable disinfection without the need for chemicals. An intelligent countdown timer with a built-in alarm system monitors UV lamp life and alerts you when replacement is due, providing continuous, safe water to every tap—ideal for homes relying on rainwater.

The specific challenge, by area

  • Growth corridors — Armstrong Creek, Charlemont, Lara and similar new estates: These areas are under constant construction as new water mains are tapped into and extended. This dislodges sediment, grit and pipe scale into the network, which can clog dishwasher and washing machine valves or tap aerators. New pipe networks also run higher chlorine residuals to stay safe over longer distances, which often shows up as a stronger “swimming pool” smell in the shower.
  • Coastal and Bellarine towns — Barwon Heads, Queenscliff, Clifton Springs, Anglesea: Many properties here sit on older pipe networks in established townships, and some outer coastal properties (particularly around Anglesea and the Otways fringe) rely partly or fully on rainwater tanks rather than mains supply. Seasonal population surges over summer also put extra demand on local infrastructure. Tank water in particular needs sediment and UV treatment, since it isn’t chemically treated the way mains water is.
  • Established Geelong suburbs: Standard chlorine/chloramine taste and odour issues consistent with any mains-fed urban network.

Building a New Home in Armstrong Creek or Charlemont?

Metricon, Simonds and G.J. Gardner all currently have active house-and-land packages or display homes in Armstrong Creek, and buyers in these estates are exactly the households most affected by the construction-sediment and elevated-chlorine issues described above. If you’re mid-build, the most efficient time to bring us in is before rough-in — we can liaise directly with your builder to fit a whole-house system at the right stage, rather than retrofitting after handover.

Why You Might Want a Water Filter in Geelong

  • New estate in Armstrong Creek, Charlemont or Lara? Ongoing main works in growth corridors mean sediment and elevated chlorine are common while infrastructure catches up to development.
  • On tank water in Anglesea, Aireys Inlet or the Otways fringe? We size sediment and UV treatment for reliable, safe indoor use.
  • Established home in Geelong, the Bellarine or Barwon Heads? Whole-house filtration deals with standard chlorine/chloramine taste and odour from the mains network.
  • Renovating or building? We plan for 20″ stainless housings, isolation/bypass valves and clean pipework from the outset.
  • Already have a filter? We can assess whether it's still doing its job or due for an upgrade.
  • Want drinking-quality water at the tap? Reverse osmosis pairs with a whole-home system for filtered water everywhere, plus purified water for cooking and drinking.

At PureFlow Filtration™, we believe that Better Water is Better Living

We’re hands-on with everything we do. We only use filters we’ve tested ourselves, and we’re picky - if it’s not good enough for our own homes, we won’t offer it to you. Our systems are built for tough Aussie conditions, and every filter is checked and certified before it leaves our hands. We’re always looking for ways to improve, whether that’s smarter designs, better materials, or new ways to make things easier for busy families.

FAQs

Soft. You don’t need a water softener, the issues in this region are chlorine, sediment and (in some coastal areas) tank water quality, not mineral scaling.

Barwon Water monitors for PFAS through their treated water testing program and, as of their most recent published water quality reporting, has not detected concentrations above the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Some households still choose a high-grade filter for extra peace of mind.

Geelong’s supply is drawn from several sources. West Barwon Reservoir, the Moorabool system, the Anglesea Borefield and, when needed, the Melbourne to Geelong Pipeline. Which source is active at a given time can shift the taste and mineral profile slightly. A whole-house filter standardises this.

Yes, typically more so. Tank water isn’t chemically treated, so it needs sediment filtration and UV disinfection to be safe for everyday indoor use.

It’s actually one of the more common reasons households in these areas install a filter. Ongoing works on the local water mains can dislodge sediment and grit, and chlorine is often run higher to keep new, longer pipe networks safe. Filtration deals with both.

Most installs are completed in a few hours once we’ve confirmed the scope for your property.

It depends on your home, water source, and whether you’re after a whole-home system, RO, or both.
